LITHUANIA IS TO COORDINATE THE NORDIC-BALTIC COOPERATION IN 2012

In 2012, Lithuania will be a centre of joint Nordic-Baltic activities. On 1 January, Vilnius takes over the coordination of the cooperation between eight Nordic-Baltic countries (NB8).

“The year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of cooperation between the eight countries. The Nordic-Baltic region is the region focused on stability, competitiveness, success and high quality. We have to build on earlier achievements and make the most of new opportunities”, stressed Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis.

Foreign trade of Lithuania in January–July 2011

Statistics Lithuania informs that, based on provisional data obtained from customs declarations and Intrastat reporting data, exports in July 2011 amounted to LTL 5.7 billion, imports – LTL 6.3 billion. Foreign trade deficit of Lithuania amounted to LTL 0.6 billion, which is by 35.8 per cent less than in the same period in 2010. Data on trade with EU countries were adjusted after VAT returns data had been received.

In July 2011, against July 2010, exports and imports increased by 26.7 and 15.6 per cent, respectively. Mineral products excluded, exports and imports grew by 18.3 and 14.8 per cent, respectively. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin grew by 29.3 per cent, mineral products excluded – by 18 per cent. An increase in exports was influenced by an increase in exports of petroleum products – 53 per cent, fertilisers – 58.7 per cent, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances, parts thereof – 24.2 per cent. An increase in imports was influenced by an increase in imports of natural gas – 3 times, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances, parts thereof – 35.8 per cent, ground vehicles – 24.7 per cent.

Harmonised index of consumer prices in Lithuania

Statistics Lithuania calculates the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which is methodologically harmonised with those of other EU member states, on a monthly basis. The conformity with the price stability criterion, set in the Maastricht Treaty, is assessed taking into consideration the inflation rate calculated based on the said index.

In August 2011, the average annual inflation calculated based on the HICP stood at 3.6 per cent and was by 0.1 percentage points lower than that calculated based on the consumer price index (CPI).

Annual inflation (August 2011, against August 2010) stood at 4.4 per cent and coincided with the annual inflation calculated based on the CPI.

The monthly (August 2011, against July) decrease in prices for consumer goods and services calculated based on the HICP amounted to 0.3 per cent, that calculated based on the CPI – 0.4 per cent.

In July 2011, external assets and external liabilities of the Bank of Lithuania contracted by LTL 278.3 million and LTL 130.6 million. At the end of the month these indicators were equal to LTL 16.9 billion and LTL 1.1 billion correspondingly.
